Reticuloendothelial function in pregnancy.

چکیده
Several clinical observations suggest that pregnancy alters reticuloendothelial (RES) function. Pregnant women are more susceptible to paralytic poliomyelitis'," and influenza,' and there is a direct relationship of multiparity to bacteruria.' Pregnancy also appears to be the state most likely to prepare a human being for a generalized Shwartzman reaction. Measurements of RES function in pregnant animals are few and have yielded diverse results; Engels7 reported pregnant rats did not clear their circulations of thorium suspensions as rapidly as controls, while McKay' described enhanced clearances of carbon particles in pregnant rats when compared to normals. Two observations suggest that pregnancy depresses the ability of the RES to clear clotting factors from the blood: 1) Agents which caused RES blockade prepared an animal for a generalized Shwartzman reaction ;9 2) only one dose of meningococcal endotoxin was necessary to induce a generalized Shwartzman reaction in a pregnant rabbit.'0 Granulopectic activity, which refers to clearance of circulating particles such as bacteria, colloidal carbon and gold, has been used to evaluate RES function. Benacerraf, et al. have studied the behavior of aggregated human serum albumin in the mouse, rat, rabbit, and guinea pig, and found that clearance of aggregated albumin obeys the same laws that govern the clearance of other colloidal suspensions from the blood.'1 The present investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of pregnancy upon RES function in three animal species by studying blood clearances of injected aggregated human serum albumin.

Gaucher's disease with myocardial involvement in pregnancy.
CONTEXT Described originally in 1882, Gaucher's disease is the most prevalent of storage disorders. This autosomal recessive disease is caused by a defective gene responsible for coding the beta-glucosidase enzyme, essential in the hydrolysis of glucosylceramide in glucose and ceramide. The accumulation of glucosylceramide in the lysosomes of the reticuloendothelial system produces a heterogene...

Plasma macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) levels were measured by enzyme immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using horse and rabbit polyvalent antibodies raised against human M-CSF purified from urine (hM-CSF). Plasma M-CSF levels in nonpregnant female controls were 364 +/- 69 U/mL (mean +/- SD, n = 20). Pregnancy results in significant elevation of circulating M-CSF levels (541 +/- 164 U/mL,...

position in the mechanism of biological protection against infections, but the marked development of chemotherapy in recent years has produced a tendency to ignore the factors of a living organism in the therapy of infections. On the other hand, wide-spread use of chemotherapeutics has produced problems of resistance and cross-infections. It has become possible to make quantitative examination ...

1. For the purpose to clarify the role of reticuloendothelial cells in the center of erythroblastic islet, the medullary and extramedullary erythropoietic foci in convalescence of phenylhydrazine arternia were observed by light and electron microscopies, and the mode of development of anemia in rabbit having blocked RES. 2. Light microscopic observations revealed the stimulated formation of ery...
متن کاملQuantitative discrimination of hepatic reticuloendothelial clearance and phagocytic killing.
An in vivo assay to quantify simultaneously two important components of hepatic reticuloendothelial system (RES) function--clearance and phagocytic killing--was developed in the rat. Intravenously injected E. coli labeled with Na51Cr and 5-[125I]-iodo-2'-deoxyuridine were cleared rapidly from the blood primarily by the liver. While hepatic 51Cr levels remained stable for 24 h following inoculat...
